The Technology category is the largest and incorporates a range of engineering disciplines, including many directly related to automotive production. The Economics category includes both traditional business administration and management courses as well as interdisciplinary programs such as Business and Engineering or Languages and Business Administration. Finally, the Quality of Life category includes a wide range of practical, interdisciplinary programs from various types of Design to applied Heath Sciences and Healthcare Management. The university supports research efforts both in connection with both public funding programs and industry projects, with a focus on applied research to solve practical problems. It also supports a high level of knowledge transfer between the academic and business worlds through various industry partnerships. Die FHO Fachhochschule Ostschweiz (University of Applied Sciences Eastern Switzerland) ist der Zusammenschluss der vier Ostschweizer Fachhochschulen zur Fachhochschule Ostschweiz. Die Kantone Schwyz, Glarus, Schaffhausen, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, St. Gallen, Graubünden und Thurgau sowie das Fürstentum Liechtenstein führen die sich ab 1995 entwickelnde Fachhochschule Ostschweiz (FHO). Grundlage zur Entstehung ist die Vereinbarung über die FHO vom 20. September 1999. Zentrales Organ ist der Fachhochschulrat der FHO, die sich auf das Fachhochschulgesetz des Bundes stützt. Mit Beschluss vom 7. März 2008 wurde ein Direktor und Beiräte eingesetzt. Die Fachhochschule Ostschweiz ist als Institution durch den Bundesrat mit Beschluss vom 2. April 2008 definitiv anerkannt. Die an den vier Hochschulen angebotenen Studiengänge sind in den Bereichen Technik, Informationstechnologie, Bau, Planung, Wirtschaft, Tourismus, Soziale Arbeit und Gesundheit angesiedelt. Die Studiengänge der FHO sind durch den Bund akkreditiert. Die Studierenden erhalten als Abschlussdiplom den Bachelor FHO oder den Master FHO. In Weiterbildungsseminaren sind Abschlüss mit CAS FHO und EMBA FHO möglich. Die FHO Fachhochschule Ostschweiz ist der Forschungsleader der Fachhochschulen. Im Vergleich zur Grösse generiert sie am Meisten Forschungsumsatz. (2014 über 52 Millionen Schweizer Franken) (siehe www.fho.ch - Jahresbericht 2014). Der Gesamtumsatz der FHO betrug 2014 über 211 Millionen Franken. 4700 Männer und Frauen waren als Bachelor oder Masterstudierende eingeschrieben, 2065 Personen besuchten Weiterbildungsseminare.
