UVU Africa, formally The Cape Innovation & Technology Initiative (CiTi) is a Non-Profit Company with a mission to build a future-fit, inclusive society through technology and innovation. We do so by creating globally competitive tech and innovation sectors to enable sustainable economic growth and greater employment. CiTi was established in 1999 and operates at the intersection of business, government and society to positively shape the future of the economy and society through the use of innovation and technology. We see this model as the key driver of systemic regional change and progression. Our success in building thriving regional technology ecosystems has been recognised in a recent Endeavor Insight report, titled Evaluation & Network Analysis of the Cape Town – Stellenbosch Tech Sector. The report concluded that “Cape Town is arguably the most productive and impactful tech hub in sub- Saharan Africa.” UVU Africa achieves its mission through the following interventions: 1. Entrepreneurial development, support and incubation; 2. Digital job readiness and skills development - training young people to enter the digital economy; and 3. Open innovation clusters - picking industries of the future and supporting and stimulating their growth. 4. Providing an ecosystem and space for entrepreneurs to thrive UVU Africa continues to look at areas that will be transformative in 20 years and have an impact in five years. Fusion Conference is an annual student-run conference that merges knowledge from the business and STEM fields. As one of the only science and business conferences in Ontario, Fusion welcomes approximately 150 students to engage in a unique and innovative learning experience that would prepare them for the workplace. Each year, students excel at applying innovation, technical skills, and soft-skills for a wide range of employers. At Fusion, we aim to bring together the intellectual minds of the future with experts from the fields of Science, Business, and Technology. Our goal is to educate and inform our delegates on current affairs, bring world problems to light, emphasize the importance of team work, and collectively brainstorm ideas to develop innovative solutions. The University Centre of the Westfjords is a small higher educational organization, which was established in 2005 and began operations in January 2006. The University Centre itself employs an average of six people, plus teachers employed freelance. The University Centre building is home to more than 50 people in research, teaching and services in various organizations and companies. The University Centre is a distance learning centre that serves about 100 distance learning students; it operates two international master’s programs: Coastal and Marine Management as well as Coastal Communities and Regional Development. Each year roughly 20 students are accepted into each master's program. The University Centre also offers a small individualised program of study at the master’s level in Marine Innovation. A variety of summer courses is also offered at the University Centre. Through distance learning, Westfjords residents can access education without having to move away from home. The University Centre provides distance learning students with facilities for teleconferencing, group work facilities and reading rooms. There tend to be about 100 distance learning students per year. Furthermore, the University Centre offers several summer courses in the Westfjords, including tailor-made courses for national and international field schools. The University Centre of the Westfjords is in partnership with various international cooperative ventures, including the University of the Arctic, and has participated in projects with the Nordic Council and the European Union. The University Centre of the Westfjords emphasis high standards and follows the Bologna Process for European university requirements, in collaboration with national and foreign universities. The faculty and staff endeavour to provide an exceptional service to both students and researchers in and outside the Westfjords.
