Baker Dearing Educational Trust was founded in 2009 by Lord Baker and the late Lord Dearing and sits at the centre of the University Technical Colleges (UTC) network. The organisation supports UTC applicant groups, provides services to UTCs once they are open and promotes the UTC brand. UTCs are secondary schools for 14-19 year olds in the UK. They deliver an innovative, high-quality education that combines technical, practical and academic learning. In doing so, they offer students more than the traditional GCSE and A Level curriculum. A UTC curriculum includes one or two technical specialisms, which are linked to the skills gaps in the region. Students study GCSEs, A Levels and technical qualifications matched to these specialisms, as well as core subjects, including English, maths and science. UTCs have a special focus on science, technology, engineering and maths subjects, and all learning is designed to be applied in the workplace. Each UTC is backed by employers and a local university who work with staff to develop the curriculum that gives students first-hand experience of what life is like after school. UTCs support all routes to employment, whether they be through apprenticeship, university or straight into work after leaving. UTCs are a growing network. At the start of 2014 there were 17 UTCs open in England. By 2018, there will be over 55 UTCs across the country. University United Methodist Church has been in ministry to the San Antonio area since it was founded as West End Methodist Church in 1890. In 1974, the congregation started a satellite campus in northwest San Antonio – a satellite that would be chartered as University United Methodist Church in 1978. Today, University is a 5800 -member congregation, drawing 3000 worshippers a week to its two campuses. Its founding priorities of children, youth and community service continue to expand today through ministries like the largest Day School (2 yrs–K) program in San Antonio, the most prolific non-profit builder of Habitat for Humanity homes in the city, “Under the Bridge” homeless ministry, an accredited secondary school for students with learning disabilities and the founding of Magdalena House (a shelter for abused women and children). University is currently expanding its u|ability ministry to the special needs community through Sunday schools, weekly worship, vocational training and “Helping Hands” servant ministry. The congregation also sponsors several clinics and medical missions in both Mexico and Guatemala, and has mission enterprises in other regions and countries, including Rwanda, Russia and Costa Rica. n 2008, the 83,000 square foot North Campus opened as a venue targeted toward youth ministry, contemporary worship (with seating for 1500) and recreation evangelism (which includes u|sk8 – an indoor skateboard ministry). University’s “Pathway to Discipleship” core curriculum and disciple development concept also launched that year.
