The University of Zakho was announced as an independent university on July, 2010. Before this date, there were two Colleges, Education and Commerce which were affiliated to the University of Duhok . The UoZ along with another three new universities were founded following the resolution made by the Parliament of Kurdistan Regional Government to address the increased demand for higher education studies in the region. Once the university has been nominated, the colleges of Education and Commerce were reorganized in to two Faculties, namely the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities. The Faculty of Science includes six departments, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Sciences, Environmental Science and Mathematics. A new Environmental Science Department will operate at the beginning of the next academic year September, 2011. The Faculty of Humanities also includes six departments, namely, Kurdish, Arabic and English languages, History, Islamic Studies and the department of Commerce and Banking. At the beginning of the next academic year, a new “ Department of the Origin of Religions “ will be operated as well.

History of University of Žilina was established on 1st of September 1953 by the separation from the Czech College of Technology in Prague In 1959, the College of Railway Transport in Prague was renamed the University of Transport and on 6 September 1960 it was relocated from Prague to Žilina. Following on from earlier developments and completing efforts to achieve universal studies, additional new faculties were created after 1989 from existing institutions, departments and faculties. The following autonomous faculties were constituted in this period: Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Management Science and Informatics. The Military Faculty was renamed the Faculty of Security Engineering (before Faculty of Special Engineering). It began its transformation into a civilian faculty. In 1998, the Faculty of Science was established. The faculty was established in order to expand the profile of Žilina University and strengthen education in the area of mathematics, natural sciences, humanities and arts. The University of Žilina provides education at all three levels of higher education both in fulltime and part-time forms (Bachelor's degree, Engineer/Master's degree and Doctoral degree). The cooperation with foreign universities enables students and university staff to actively participate in ERASMUS, Leonardo da Vinci, CEEPUS, TEMPUS, COPERNICUS, COST, in 5th, 6th, and 7th Framework programmes and many others. 65,000 graduates have graduated from the University of Žilina, 1,500 of them from abroad. The University currently houses seven faculties and seven institutes and employs 641 university teachers. The total number of employees is 1,650. There are currently about 8 thousand students enrolled in all forms of studies. Participating in various international organisations and associations University of Žilina actively influences the development of European educational and research activities.

The Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute (EBPI) is a leading coordinator of research streams from discovery science to population- and patient-based health research. We actively engage in contextualizing and translating evidence from epidemiological and clinical research to evidence-based medical and public health practice. At the EBPI we practice translational research. In a literal sense, that means that we “translate” research findings into everyday medical and public health practice. But it’s much more than that. We see the EBPI as a framework where researchers, medical professionals and the general public connect. And through this network we are able to best integrate research knowledge into medical practice and, conversely, to feed practical experience back into research. That does not happen everywhere. Because we not only conduct research, but also offer public clinical and preventive services, the EBPI is an exception in Switzerland and the world.
