Narvalo nasce sui banchi della Scuola del Design del Politecnico di Milano. Nella testa di un giovane designer italiano di origini olandesi, Ewoud Westerduin, a riconoscere la potenzialità del progetto è Venanzio Arquilla - Professore del Dipartimento di Design e suo relatore di tesi – che lo aiuta a svilupparla. Siamo nel settembre del 2018. L’idea è interessante e viene incubata da POLIHUB, nell'ambito dell’iniziativa Switch to Product. Il programma che valorizza soluzioni innovative, nuove tecnologie e idee d’impresa proposte da studenti, ricercatori e docenti del Politecnico di Milano. L’idea è pronta per affrontare il mare aperto. Il progetto naviga nel sistema dell’innovazione Politecnica, e viene selezionato come “talent in residence” in POLIFACTORY, il Maker Space e Fablab del Politecnico di Milano. Qui vengono realizzati i primi prototipi. Il progetto interpreta concretamente la Terza Missione del Politecnico di Milano, che si propone di favorire lo sviluppo sociale, economico e culturale del suo territorio riferimento: la Bovisa. Gli aspetti di filtrazione dell’aria sono infatti sviluppati insieme a BLS, azienda boutique milanese, anch'essa nata in Bovisa.
