The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is the state of Alabama's marine education and research institution. Founded in 1971 by the state legislature to reduce redundancy in higher education, the DISL has grown to include K-12 education, professional development, and a public aquarium. The DISL's location on the eastern tip of Dauphin Island makes it the perfect place for a wide range of marine science activity. The campus is surrounded by Mobile Bay, the Mississippi Sound, and the northern Gulf of Mexico. University Programs serves 23 Alabama colleges and universities with graduate and undergraduate studies throughout the year. The research programs range from biogeochemistry and oceanography to systems ecology. Although most research focuses on the near-shore and estuarine processes of Mobile Bay, field sites of our internationally-renowned faculty include Mexico, Australia, and the Arctic. Discovery Hall Programs encompasses K-12 field programs, professional development, and public outreach with DISL's traveling classroom, the BayMobile. Visitors to the public aquarium, the Estuarium, journey through the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, Mobile Bay, the Barrier Islands, and the northern Gulf of Mexico to learn about the ecosystem from top to bottom. One of our area’s major players in coastal zone management is the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, falls within the DISL’s numerous programs. OUR MISSION: We are dedicated to a single purpose: Empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. We accomplish this by ensuring that veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits available to them, fighting for the interests of America's injured heroes on Capitol Hill, and educating the public about the great sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to civilian life. WHAT WE DO: -Our highly-trained department service officers (DSOs) provide free, professional assistance to veterans of all generations in obtaining VA and other government benefits earned through service. These DSOs provide counseling on all veterans’ benefits including disability compensation, health care, pension, survivors’ benefits, employment rights, education and more. Our DSOs also help veterans assemble evidence needed to support claims, build their cases, and prepare forms and briefs. - We fight for the rights of ill and injured veterans on Capitol Hill. - We provide transportation for veterans who need help getting to and from medical appointments. - We link service-injured veterans to job training and job assistance programs. - We fund rehabilitation programs for veterans with severe disabilities. - We give emergency grants to ill and injured veterans living in areas damaged by natural disasters. - We help homeless veterans by providing food and shelter while connecting veterans to medical care, benefits counseling and job training. - We host recreational programs, which bring veterans together.
