Uma demanda de empresários do segmento FV em torno de um tema comum, Geração Distribuída, culminou com um encontro e posteriormente uma reunião onde concluíram pela necessidade de uma entidade que pudesse agregar valor e atender às demandas políticas, técnicas e regulatórias que o setor demanda. Sendo assim, em 28 de setembro de 2015, vinte empresários se reuniram em São Paulo e fundaram a ABGD - Associação Brasileira de Geração Distribuída; pessoa jurídica de direito privado, sem fins lucrativos, que reúne provedores de soluções, EPC's, integradores, distribuidores, fabricantes, empresas de diferentes tamanhos e segmentos, além de profissionais e acadêmicos do setor, que têm em comum a atuação direta ou indireta na geração distribuída oriunda de fontes renováveis. A ABGD se predispõe a representar e defender os interesses de seus associados junto aos órgãos governamentais, entidades de classe, órgãos reguladores, "players"​ do setor, e mais do que isso, trabalhar em prol da inclusão dos diferentes setores da sociedade, para se beneficiarem ativamente da Geração Distribuída, incorporando os conceitos de sustentabilidade, retorno financeiro, segurança jurídica, eficiência energética e previsibilidade de gastos, no que tange a “geração” e consumo de energia no mesmo local.
