Short History and the Faculty today The tradition of higher education in the field of Civil Engineering in Split began in 1971 with the founding of the Department of Civil Engineering as part of the University of Zagreb. The institution started to exist autonomously in 1977 as the Faculty of Civil Engineering Science of the University of Split. The Faculty has had its own building since the day it was founded. It covers an area of 8400 m2 which is used for halls, lecture halls, student study rooms, offices, laboratories, a library, and a conference room. The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture performs university study of Civil Engineering, university study of Architecture, university study of Geodesy and Geoinformatics, and professional study of Civil Engineering. Since the academic year 1992/1993 postgraduate (doctorate) university studies have been performed as well. Courses and scientific research are carried out in 21 departments and 5 centers. Courses are delivered by 54 lecturers: 42 doctors of science, 6 masters of science, 14 assistants and 30 external associates. 26 junior research assistants have also been involved into the teaching process, three of which have a Ph.D. degree and 4 a M.Sc. degree.
