Legal Momentum

Legal Momentum, established in 1970, is the first and longest-running legal defense and education fund dedicated to advancing the rights of women and girls across the United States. Through impactful programming, education, policy initiatives, advocacy, and litigation, we work tirelessly to champion equality. Since our inception, Legal Momentum has litigated groundbreaking cases and successfully advocated for laws, addressing issues such as sex discrimination, sexual harassment, and gender-based violence. We protect and advocate for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, harassment and discrimination. Our critical role in drafting and advocating for the passage of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) continues with our involvement in its re-authorizations. We also advance economic security, fair wages, quality jobs, equal access to education, and equal protections to achieve economic equality and security for all women. In 2022, we played a pivotal role in drafting and enacting transformative pay transparency laws in New York, which require employers to disclose pay ranges in job postings. This legislation has inspired similar initiatives in numerous states. Our ongoing advocacy continues as we strive to protect and expand these critical laws nationwide.
